The Alan J. Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health (CPMH) is the first of its kind on the African continent, and is a joint initiative of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Department of Psychology at Stellenbosch University (SU).  The CPMH conducts high quality research on public mental health, and uses evidence for teaching, consultancy and advocacy to promote mental health in Africa. This is in recognition of the need to prioritise mental health on the public health agenda; to develop professional mental health capacity; and to develop policy, service and legislative frameworks to scale up systems of mental health care in Africa.

The CPMH is dedicated to the memory of Professor Alan J. Flisher, a pioneer of African public mental health.  For the many clinical and research colleagues, students and collaborators throughout the African continent who were touched by Alan's life, the CPMH provides a tangible way of carrying forward his legacy, and embodies the values and commitment that he evoked.
